The Comet Is Coming - Exploding In Slow Motion: The Complete Channel The Spirits Recordings 2013-2017CE The Comet Is Coming
2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Channel The Spirits – the debut album by The Comet Is Coming.
This maximalist reissue includes the original album, the Prophecy and Death To The Planet EPs and various rarities from the era including four previously unreleased tracks.
‘Late Night Party Jam 2’ has been added to the fabled Ancient Tapes – the earliest known Comet recordings from The Total Refreshment Centre in 2013, where Comet were the unofficial house band.
There are also searing live renditions of ‘Final Eclipse’ and ‘Space Carnival’ and a session version of ‘Neon Baby’ recorded for John Kennedy’s Xfm show.
The triple vinyl version available to retail will be limited to just 1500 units for the universe on translucent violet, blue and orange discs in printed inner and die-cut outer sleeves, plus a die-cut O-card slipcase and a 60 x 60cm double-sided fold-out poster. NON-RETURNABLE.
For full sensory overload, each of the sleeves is printed on both outer and inner surfaces.
The double CD supersedes the 2017 2CD special edition, adding Death To The Planet and all the bonus material, packaged in a gatefold card wallet with printed inners and a fold-out poster booklet.
Channel The Spirits was a 2016 Mercury Music Prize shortlisted Album Of The Year.
MOJO, Uncut, the Quietus, and The Line Of Best Fit all selected the record as one of their Albums Of The Year, as well as influential retailers Resident, Jumbo and Drift.
2026 marks ten years since the planets aligned for the release of Channel The Spirits – the debut album by The Comet Is Coming. The trio of Shabaka, Danalogue and Betamax, powerful in their own right, transcended to another plane when united.
Exploding In Slow Motion: The Complete Channel The Spirits Recordings 2013-2017CE celebrates that legacy by bringing together the original album, the Prophecy and Death To The Planet EPs and various rarities from the era, including four previously unreleased tracks. Released on coloured triple vinyl in a maximalist package, as well as a new double CD, the reissue sees Death To The Planet on CD for the first time, and seven tracks new to vinyl, including one completely new track unearthed from the band’s first ever recorded session.
The Comet was first sighted in 2013, their reputation enhanced by transformative live shows at the Total Refreshment Centre in east London and beyond. Their debut EP Prophecy arrived in a blaze of light and sound and word spread. Channel The Spirits followed and the wider world sat up and took notice, notably when the album was named a Mercury Music Prize album of the year in 2016. It was followed closely by the Death To The Planet EP – although death in this case was rebirth. And dancing.
In 2019 the band signed for Impulse! and recorded two further albums – Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery and Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam, plus The Afterlife EP. It took The Comet Is Coming global, with tours across five continents.
The Comet Is Coming burned bright for a relatively short time but touched everyone who witnessed them in action - a spiritual union of exceptional musicianship, utter conviction and a rare ability to channel the energy of the universe and capture it on tape and on stage.
“Powered by Arkestral cosmic forces, The Comet Is Coming. Brace for impact” The Guardian
“If intergalactic jazz voyager Sun Ra had relocated to Cologne in 1971, he may well have made an album like this” MOJO
“The raw beauty of the ambitious 42-minute album is a joy to behold” 9/10 The Line of Best Fit
