This was originally published in Relevant Newsletter #229 (Thursday 19th March 2020), but so many people got in touch to say they liked it, we thought we'd repeat it on our website. Plus, more website content means higher Google rankings, right?! Sign up to our weekly Relevant Newsletter for more of the same!

This week we thought we'd close with an "opinion piece" from the basement. Remember Jerry Springer's Final Thought? Like that! "World's gone mad, mate" - who knew that Disco Kenny would be considered a prophetic soothsayer within his own lifetime?! It's 2020; jazz is popular again, gin cocktails are fashionable, people are dying from preventable diseases, we're on the brink of another great recession, even racism is back on the rise. For anyone who was hoping they'd live through a revival of the roaring '20s this century, it looks like we've got to "take the good with the bad", and that history is (rather worryingly) repeating itself. In these troubled times, it's more important than ever for us to take responsibility for our actions, treat each other with respect and dignity, and be kind to one-another. Don't just post "R.I.P. Caroline, Be Kind" on your social media account and then proceed to be self-centred and horrible in your day-to-day life. We're all going to be experiencing some tough times over the coming weeks and months, and even though we're instructed to distance and isolate, it's more important than ever to come together as a community and look after both loved ones and strangers. Fighting deadly disease in a "post-truth world" presents some serious challenges, but now is the time to listen to what science is telling us, not succumb to fear, panic or sensationalism, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And of course - spend money in your local independent record shop! We'll see you again next week, in the mean time take care of yourself, and each other.
