Live Music at Relevant

We host free entry live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, with performances running until 10pm. These evenings are a chance for people to relax, enjoy great music and experience local talent in an informal setting.

While we’re not music promoters and don’t run gigs in the traditional way, we’re always happy to hear from local artists who can bring along a crowd. After all, the best gigs are the ones with a great atmosphere and a full room.

What We Offer

We provide the use of our space and equipment free of charge, including a PA system, three microphones with stands, and an 8-channel mixer. We’ll also pay £25 towards travel costs, and you’re welcome to pass the hat around during the evening and keep any contributions.

As it’s your night, you’ll be responsible for curating the line-up, so feel free to invite other artists or bands to join you. Please note that we don’t have a sound engineer on site, so performers will need to operate the mixer themselves.

Please Note

We’ll help spread the word by adding the event to our website, in-store events board and weekly email newsletter, and we’re happy to share your Facebook event from our page as well.

Because the performances take place in the upstairs venue space, we ask that acts avoid anything too heavy or confrontational to keep the atmosphere enjoyable for everyone.

FAQs

Here you will hopefully find the information you need to help decide if Relevant Records is the venue for you! This should be read alongside the Terms & Conditions.

Please read through the following questions before emailing to request a booking, as some of your queries may be easily answered here, if we’ve missed something then get in touch with any further questions and we shall endeavor to assist!

Do we have to pay to play?

No.

We offer the free use of space in the café. You are not hiring the venue and the Café will remain open to the general public during the Gig/Event.  In making the venue free to use we are actively encouraging local acts who need a platform for their performance, an opportunity to play to an audience in an intimate friendly Café environment.

Can we charge an entry fee or sell tickets?

No.

In order to promote accessibility to live music for everyone we do not charge for entry into the café on evenings when Gigs/Events are happening.  We do have a “kitty” available for organisers/bands to help towards travelling costs (those instruments don’t move themselves!) so that you aren’t out of pocket, we also actively encourage the bringing of a hat (or a bowl or a suitcase even, depending on how amazing you sound!), that can be passed around after the Gig/Event – This works well, generally people are very appreciative if they have had a good time and enjoyed the show, don’t be shy about asking!!

*Occasionally Relevant Records hosts Charity Events which can be ticketed. If you are interested in holding a Charity Event please contact us direct to discuss.*

What equipment do you provide?

P.A., 3 x Microphones inc. leads and stands and a 6-channel mixer.

Please note we do not have a dedicated sound engineer available, so you will need to work the mixer yourself… or bring someone who can!  Staff will set up mics and speakers in the performance area but the magic you have to supply!

When is the space available for events/gigs?

The Café stays open late on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, closing at 10pm.

These are the only days that the café is available for events/gigs, and most evening entertainments start between 7pm & 8pm and are finished no later than 10pm. We cannot accommodate matinee or early evening performances due to the limited space available and the need to maintain the number of covers during normal café trading hours (we are just too busy!).  Acts are expected to arrive no less than 30 minutes before performance time to set up etc, and are more than welcome to arrive early and relax with a drink and some pizza before hand!

What type of music or event is allowed? Can we play anything?

Any and all kinds of musical genres are welcome at Relevant Records however, due to the nature of the space and consideration for our neighbours, large bands (7+members) and over amplified/excessively loud music just isn’t possible – we can certainly recommend other suitable venues though!

Music sets can be acoustic or electric, from Folk to Rock, Jazz, World music, classical. Themed or a wide range of genres and individual acts, its up to you! We have decks available for D.Js if that’s your vibe, just bring your vinyl. Launch parties, Open Mic Nights, Poetry Slams and anything else that will draw a crowd or has a local following are more than welcome at Relevant.

Interested in hosting and organising a regular event for our calendar? Get in touch!

This is YOUR event! We will assist if you need us too but we cant provide support acts etc, the time slot is yours to fill (we can put you in touch with other like minded souls, but the leg work is all you!).

Does Relevant Records promote the event/gig? How do we get that crowd?

We are not “promoters” as such, although we will be advertising any events/gigs that we are hosting on our own social media pages, we will NOT be putting up posters or producing flyers that is the responsibility of the event/gig organiser.

In the first instance organisers should be willing and able to create an event on Facebook, with AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE included, and then make Relevant Records a Co-Host.  We are then able to share and generate some interest amongst our existing client base.

All events come up on our Facebook events calendar, upcoming events are also included in the Relevant Records weekly newsletter and advertised in the café itself on our pinboard.  Staff at Relevant (of course) Love music and will be enthusiastically recommending events and gigs to customers, which is why that information is so important!

What can you do? Spread the word, tell friends, family, work pals, the bloke at the bus stop. Generate interest and get your people to support you, share on social media as much as possible, get your mum to share! Be sure to include links to soundcloud or YouTube on the Facebook event, it really does make a difference. Get those likes! Mention who your support band is/are get their followers on board too! Make sure you have plenty of time to promote the event before it happens. If you need any help, let us know!

Everyone wants your event/gig to go well and be successful for everyone involved, no one wants to play to an empty room and Relevant can’t staff and hold an event to which only 3 people turn up! It is in YOUR best interest to ensure that the evening is well attended, if interest is low we reserve the right to cancel at any time. If we have a full house and lots of happy customers we WILL be asking you back… Simples.

How many people can the venue hold… how big is this crowd?

Capacity is 60. This includes 40 seats (once the performance area has been set up) and room for approx. 20 standing. This is not a huge number, and the venue has had many successful evenings without hitting capacity.

Okay, all sounds good. Most important question, Is there a bar?

You betcha.

2-for-1 cocktails 5pm-7:30pm, a range of beers including GF, quality wines and of course tea and coffee served until 9:30pm for that all important caffeine hit.

How do we book?

Excellent! Email us at gigs@relevantrecordcafe.co.uk, have a few dates in mind as we like to get booked up as quickly as possible and your preferred dates may already be booked. We do hold regular monthly events also, some dates just aren’t available, so it pays to be flexible.

Give us some info in your email, links to previous performances or some material, tell us where you are from, how many performers you have, how you see the event ‘going down’ .

We will email you back with availability and look forward to hearing you in the future!
